So with Riot Fest in Chicago this week I had to play some classics to get y’all in the mood. Naked Raygun, Butthole Surfers, Murder City Devils, and Screeching Weasel. The shows are gonna be fun for this old fart.

Lights Out! (Germany) play real, snot-nosed punk rock. No whininess. No melodic choruses. No shit. 14 short, fast, middle-fingers in 20 minutes or so! Their debut Destroy Create (Yo-Yo Records) is a blast of furious energy. I played the longest song on it so you could enjoy ‘em that much longer. Live fast die hard!

Mayyors (Sacramento, CA) is throat hammering noise rock while operating a lawnmower. Deads e.p. is a limited (500 copies) 4 song 12” with a mud (or something) textured paper sleeve. For you vinyl freaks. On Hurling Man.

Heroine Sheiks is noise rock made up of ex-members of the lengendary COWS. They have a few releases, “Journey…” being their last. Literally. I just read they have split up since this record. Bummer. On AmRep…What you say?…yes indeedy I did…Amphetamine Reptile. Remember them? Awwww maaaaan!! You know it!!!

Sabertooth Zombie (Cali) definitely have one of the coolest names I’ve heard in a while. These guys mix Sabbath-style riffs, fast paced punk bursts, 80s crossover hardcore, with Motorhead-esque ROCK’N’ROLL!! Chug-a-chug!

Veracrush is catchy stoner rock from Italy. The first thing I thought of when I heard it was old, early Queens of the Stone Age. I think you’ll agree. 11.11 (Go Down Records).

And a special treat (or trick?) for you this month. Get ready! A special Halloween version of staticfraction radio will be coming to a graveyard near you in just a short couple-o-weeks!! Just in time the best day of the year!!!!

Dance? I thought we were dancing?

The Oblivians – What Rock N Roll is All About (Sympathy Sessions – 1996)

The Camelots – Charge! (1960s)

The Teen Beats - Big Bad Boss Beat (Tabu! – 1964)

Troy Hess – Please Don’t Go Topless (1955)

Big Sam Savage – Ohh Gosh (Frolic Diner - 1958)

Doc Starks & the Nightriders – Six Button Benny (1957)

Buddy Sharpe & the Shakers - Fat Mama Twist (At the Party Too! – 1957)

Teengenerate – Fake Fake Fake (Get Action – 1995)

Zakary Thaks – Bad Girl (I Was a Teenage Caveman – 1966)

King Khan and BBQ Show – Pig Pig (S/T – 2007)

Nights and Days – Diddy Wah Diddy (Garbage Can 7” – 1988)

Lights Out! – Destination Annihilation (Destroy Create – 2008)

Naked Raygun – Only in America (Throb Throb – 1985)

Butthole Surfers – Woly Boly (Psychic…Powerless…Another Man’s Sac – 1985)

Murder City Devils – I Drink the Wine (In Name and Blood – 2000)

Screeching Weasel – Supermarket Fantasy (Boogadaboogadaboogada!– 1988)

Mayyors – Ghost Punch (Deads 12” – 2009)

Fitt – Scholar (The Fitt 7” - 2008)

Heroine Sheiks – Be a Man (Journey to the End of a Knife – 2008)

Young Ginns – Cemetary (Young Ginns – 1998)

Sabertooth Zombie – Guide Me (And Your Fathers Are Dead In the Ground – 2009)

Welcome friends. More dirtiness, more raunch, more obnoxiousness, more craziness, more stuff to make yer mom say, what’s the matter with you? Which is what you expect here at staticfraction, and why you keep comin back. So strap yer rock goggles on tight, crack open a beer (you’ll need it) and hop in.

So we have a few punk classics from the late 70s in there….The Rezillos (Scotland) and The Avengers (San Fran). 2 bands from the first wave of punk rock. Stuff I grew up with as kid. (I’m old, but I’m not that old) but still classics to me. As well as some newer stuff. Gallows (UK) whom I recently discovered is punk with a capital “P”.. They’re new record is on Epitaph which..well..doesn’t mean anything actually. Dust off yer studded belts!

Some dirty garage stuff for you from the west coast, The Squares (L.A.) and The Hexxers (San Diego). Nothing groundbreaking but that’s just fine. Garage is supposed to be raw, gritty, lousy, and sloppy. That’s why we love it so.

2 bands from Australia just for the sake of mentioning it, The Victims, around back in 1977, and Poppin’ Mommas, some ga-rage rockn from a few years back on Au-go-go records. Get yerself some.

So ‘dis band Methodist (Brooklyn, NY) I discovered kind of by accident. I went to see my friends Millions play a show, who were opening. I had no idea who they were, but holy head-bangin hounddogs!! Good 90’s amrep/touch n go sounding muck. I picked up their new CD which was produced by Alex Newport (of Fudge Tunnel fame) and whom has mixed and/or produced bands like Sepultura, Melvins, At The Drive-In, Rival Schools…etc. You get the idear. So… did I mention its good? Yeah, well pick it up if you can find it anywhere. And you can send cookies to thank me when you do.

Celan (Germany) is the new project from Chris Spencer (Unsane, Cutthroats 9) and Ari Meyers (Einsturzende Neubauten). Their debut “Halo” (Exile on Mainstream records) sounds exactly what you’d expect from throwing those 2 guys into a record making puree machine. Its heavy, dark, brutal, and aggressive, with keyboard textures and mellow ambience parts, giving it a post industrial feel at times. Baddass!!

Madraso (Seattle) are huge and sludgy noise rock with a metallic edge. This is the type of shit that got me into Amrep style bands in the first place. “Van Horne” (Pseudo Recordings) rips!! From beginning to end! Takes me back to the first time I heard Helmet. I had to change my shorts. And they include a CD with the vinyl. Gotta love it. Ridiculously highly recommended.

Aaaaaand…Fight Amp. Fight Amp. Fight Amp. Jeez man, unbelievable. Rockin from New Joy-sey. Last years record “Hungry for Nothing” (Translation Loss records) is one amazing slab of concrete. To describe…sludge/doom/noiserock/metal/post-hardcore. And these are just references. They pull from these genres to create no bullshit modern heavy rock. Can’t really say they sound like anyone. Which is a good thing. Was gonna feature a song from the full-length, but realized they just recorded a new unreleased single. So that’s whats here. Again, cookies to thank me.

Hope you’re ready. Here goes nuthin.

The Centures - 4th Dimension (Strumming Mental 2 1957-65)

JC Davis – Monkey (1963)

Dyna Sores - Jungle Walk (1960)

The Ramrocks – Lasagna (1962)

Nat Kendrick & the Swans - (Do The) Mashed Potatos Part II (Frolic Diner)

The Rock-a-Bouts – She’s a Fat Girl (At The Party!)

The Busters – Bust Out (1963)

The Hexxers – No One Knows Where My Where My Wild Seeds Are Sown (Freaks with the Savage Beat - 2005)

The Squares – I Got More Hate (Squarification - 1996)

The Victims – Television Addict (7” - 1977)

Poppin’ Mommas – Hot Waves, Cool Babes (Sheltered Workshop – 1993)

Avengers – We Are The One (Avengers - 1979)

Rezillos – Somebodys Gonna Get Their Head Kicked In (Can’t Stand the… - 1978)

Black Cross – Business Is Ever (Severance Pays – 2007)

Gallows – Black Eyes (Grey Britain – 2009)

Methodist – Bad Posture (Methodist - 2009)

High Dependency Unit – Stupormodel (Metamathics – 2008)

Celan – One Minute (Halo – 2009)

Bison B.C. – Cancer Rat (Earthbound - 2007)

KEN Mode – The Romanticist (Mennonite – 2008)

Madraso – Daisy Cutter (Van Horne - 2009)

Fight Amp – Faith In Man (Unreleased - 2009)

Larry Dale - Drinkin Wine Spo Dee O Dee (1962)

Hallo and welcome back to another most excellent episode, featuring more of the raunchy rawk n roll you’ve come to know and love. Hope y’all give this episode a big fat shiny ‘10’ on your scorecards, as this is my (whopping) 10th episode! Wow. Amazing. Almost a year of doing this crap already. And as the heat starts to kick up outside, the awesome tunes continue to stay HOT right here.

So I’ve discovered and re-discovered a lot of noise rock bands recently. Been going back listening to a lot of AmRep stuff, and am a big fan of Albini/Big Black/Shellac schtuff (and all points in between). If yer a fan of this stuff too, (and why wouldn’t you be?) then you’ll love New Brutalism (Knoxville), and Aussies My Disco (Melbourne), a band who recently did a split 7” with the mighty Young Widows.

And speaking of Young Widows, whom have been on heavy rotation in my daily listenings, I discovered Brain Banger (Louisville, KY) who features members of the Widows. Their full length is amazing. And comes on yellow vinyl. Hawthorne Street Records.

The Ax (Portland) deliver their debut full length on Whoa! Boat Records. Its primitive. Its heavy. Its obsessed noise rock.

Quatre Tête (Chicago) is prog and metal-infused riffs against a math-rock backdrop. Their full length is on Sickroom Records, and features cover art from rock poster god, Jay Ryan. Neat-o.

JJ Paradise Players Club (NY) are heavy. And nasty. They feature members of Unsane, Glazed Baby, Shiner, Kill Van Kull and more, with heavy emphasis on the Unsane. Dead Teenager records.

And more heavy stuff. Gojira (France) are on Prosthetic records. METAL!! And, The Capricorns (London, England) on Rise Above Records. This is what Pelican should be doing.

And of course the show wouldn’t be complete without including some garage schlock, some old punk, and a set of insane, crazy gibble gobble from the 50s and 60s… Stay thirsty my friends. R.I.P. John Hughes.

Los Twang! Marvels - Rancho Cucamonga (Guitars in Orbit - 2006)

The Crawdaddy’s – That is Rock and Roll (Here ‘Tis - 1987)

Smiley Smith – Voo Doo Woman (1959)

Bunker Hill – The Girl Can’t Dance (1963)

The Dinks – Kocka-Mow-Mow (The Big Itch Vol 2 – 1966))

Boots Randolph – Percolator (1958)

Lou Millet - Slip Slip Slippin’ In (Twilight Zone Jukebox Vol 2 – 1956)

Bob Log III – Bump Pow! Bump Pow! (My Shit is Perfect – 2009)

The Dirtbombs – Stuck in Thee Garage (Dangerous Magical Noise – 2003)

Le Face – Tylenol Killer (Isolation - 2008)

Off With Their Heads – Theme Song (Hospitals – 2006)

Decry – Surburban Death Camp (Falling – 1984)

Bad Brains – I Against I (I Against I – 1986)

The Forty Fives – Superpill (High Life High Volume – 2004)

The Ax – Bargain in Hell (Our Queen of Dirt – 2009)

My Disco – A Marker (Cancer – 2006)

Brain Banger – Here’s to You (Yellow Belly – 2007)

New Brutalism – 025 (A Diagram Without Scale or Dimension - 2000)

Quatre Tête – Sleeping Dragon (Art of the State – 2008)

JJ Paradise Players Club – Face Plant (Regenesis – 2004)

Gojira – Toxic Garbage Island (the Way of all Flesh - 2008)

The Capricorns – Seventh Child of a Seventh Child (River, Bear Your Bones – 2008)

A little tribute to start things off… Bob Bogle, one of the founding members of the incredible, and innovative 60s surf/instro band the Ventures passed away. They have to be recognized and appreciated for their genius, and what they’ve done to shape rock n roll.

Another set of off-kilter rare, oddball weirdness is always to be expected here at staticfraction, but the one highlight here I must mention is the Nomads – Icky Poo. Obviously the Stray Cats heard this obscure nugget and made it their own. Amazing!

The Guilty Hearts kick around some blues rock trash from Switzerland. On Voodoo Rhythm records. And The Street Dogs are drunks from from Boston, featuring Mike McColgan of the Dropkick Murphys. They have a newer record on Hellcat records, but this song comes from their 2006 record on Brass Tacks. Cheers!

Bear Claw is an amazing ker-chunk of music from Chicago on Sickroom Records. 2 basses and drums makes this stuff heavy on the ‘ol ear canals. Recorded and mixed by Steve Albini, and mastered by Bob Weston. Great stuff.

The Young Widows are from Louisville Kentucky and are quickly making a name for themselves. ‘Old Wounds’ is from last year on Temporary Residence, and it slightly more experimental than their earlier stuff. They also have a series of split singles with some bands like…oh… Coliseum and Pelican. Check ‘em out opening for Harvey Milk and Torche too!!! YESSSS!

Sweet Cobra also hails from Chicago, and just released this blisteringly, heavy, mother-crunching 3 song vinyl EP on the Seventh Rule label. The EP features an awesome etched side featuring artwork, and is very limited. (Probably gone as I’m writing this.) I’m sure digital copies will make their way around soon, but who cares about digital when you can get vinyl, right?

And rounding out the show, some songs about bourbon. There seems to be this ‘booze theme’ ending the shows lately. Maybe because I’m enjoying a tasty beverage right now. Well it seems ok to me. Alright, enough…enjoy the tunes!!!

The Ventures – Kickstand (Wild Things – 1966)

The Hypstrz – Talk Talk (Hypstrization! – 1980)

Cecil McCullough – Pick ‘Em Up & Shake ‘Em Up (1961)

Link Wray – Big City After Dark (Rumble! – 1962)

Bob Williams – My Goose is Cooked (Stompin’ Vol 1 – 1964)

Nomads – Icky Poo (7” – 1960s)

Mad Mike & the Maniacs – The Hunch (Mad Mike Monsters Vol 1 – 1960)

Guilty Hearts – Him or Me (The Guilty Hearts – 2005)

Street Dogs – Common People (Fading American Dream - 2006)

No Comment – Past Tense (Downsided EP – 1992)

Battalion of Saints – (I’m Gonna) Make You Scream (Fighting Boys EP – 1982)

Jakkpot – Burnin in ’77 (Always Bet on Black – 1999)

Bear Claw – Point to a Point (Slow Speed Deep Owls – 2008)

Arriver – A Mighty Fray (Vanlandingham and Zone – 2006)

Young Widows – Lucky and Hardheaded (Old Wounds – 2008)

Tombs – The Great Silence (Winter Hours – 2009)

Sweet Cobra – Bottom Feeder (Bottom Feeder – 2009)

Hacride – Act of God (Lazarus – 2009)

Unida – Thorn (Coping with the Urban Coyote – 1999)

Tenderloin – Bourbon (Tenderloin – 1999)

Billy Starr – I’m Drinkin’ Bourbon (Buffalo Bop – 1960s)

Ooo boy howdy. It’s that time again!!!!! Another thrilling, heart-pounding, show-stopping adventure through the depths of the Rock N Roll vaults! You know how it goes: punk, garage, surf, metal, and of course, rock n roll!!!

The Urges (Dublin, Ireland) put the laughter back in manslaughter. Psyched-out 60’s style garage punk. Best thing from Ireland since Jameson. On Wicked Cool records. Another freakin’ fabulous record from Vee Dee, bass-heavy, fist-pumping, punk with a twist of hard-edged garage psychedelia. Criminal IQ records.

Some classic punk from each coastlines for ya since summer is upon us and BBQs are-a-rollin’ out. From the east, Murphy’s Law (NY) and their ‘hit’ from their first self-titled record. Stuff your face and have your fill! And from the west, M.I.A. (not the electronic band) from Cali, and their quite nice, pop-punk cover of Califonia Dreamin’. This comes from the After the Fact record on Flipside records. For a history lesson kids, a few of these guys went on to form Big Drill Car.

Death (not the metal band) was around in Detroit, 1975. 3 brothers recorded this incredible, lost record, which has recently been re-issued on Drag City records. Death falls somewhere between 70’s hard rock, the Stooges and MC5, and Bad Brains. 7 songs and all amazing!

Millions is a Chicago based outfit, on the Seventh Rule label (Indian, Sweet Cobra, Akimbo). It’s math-metal, mid-90s noise, noisy hardcore, thrown into a blender with whiskey and southern-fried rock. Grrr.

A couple of Sabbath-esque songs. Serpent Throne (Germany) on Modus Operandi records, and Black Pyramid (Massachusetts) from their self titled release on MeteorCity records. This stuff is always a hit a BBQ’s too. Heavy!! Steak Number Eight (Belgium) takes a big nod to ISIS and Neurosis. Experimental/Post Metal. Self-released.

End (New York) sounds like a new hipster electronic band being mugged in a back alley by a surf rock band. Retro 60s vibe, sounding like Big Black trying to play the Batman Theme. Name drop time: Mike Patton (Faith No More, Mr. Bungle, Fantomas, Tomahawk, Dub Trio, etc. etc.). Nuff said.

And lastly, NOFX. Probably all I need to say, but I’ve been a fan for a long time and their latest Coaster (the CD) or Frisbee (the LP), is entertaining as usual. Nothing mind-blowing, just fun. No political stuff here either. On Fat Wreckchords. But you knew that already.

Ok lets get rockin!!

Defoliants – Mr. Spy (Hang Ten 7” – 1987)

The Sparkles – Hipsville 29 B.C. (Mayhem & Psychosis Vol 2 - 1966)

Ric Gary – Pimples and Braces (Swing for a Crime – 1960)

Rock Garden - Super Stuff (Teenage Shutdown Vol.13 – 1966-69)

The Urges – You Don’t Look So Good (Psych-Ward – 2007)

Vee Dee – Blood Zombie (Further - 2004)

Murphy’s Law – Crucial BBQ (Murphy’s Law – 1986)

M.I.A. – Calfornia Dreamin’ (After the Fact – 1987)

Gang Green – Terrorize (Sold Out/Terrorize 7” – 1982)

Devil Dogs – Baby I’m a King (30 Sizzling Slabs - 1992)

Death – Freakin’ Out (For the Whole World to See – Orig 1975 re-issue 2009)

Mule – I’m Hell (Mule – 1993)

Loincloth – Noise International (4 Song Demo - 2003)

Millions – View From a Sinking Ship (Gather Scatter – 2009)

Serpent Throne – Veil of the Black Witch (Ride Satan Ride – 2008)

Steak Number Eight – Blood on Your Hands (When the Candle Dies Out - 2008)

Black Pyramid – Twilight Grave (Black Pyramid – 2009)

End – A Girl Called Trouble (A Girl Called Trouble - 2008)

NOFX – First Call (Coaster/Frisbee – 2009)

Rocky Bill Ford – Beer Drinking Blues (His Complete Recordings – 1950s)

Probably all I need to say, but I've been a fan for a long time and their latest Coaster (the CD) or Frisbee (the LP), is entertaining as usual. Nothing mind-blowing, just fun. No political stuff here either. On Fat Wreckchords. But you knew that already.

Ok lets get rockin!!

Nobunny plays 60s inspired lo-fi garage, new from last years 2008 Love Visions record. If you aren’t instantly in love the second this hits your stereo, I’m afraid there isn’t a fun bone in your body or a human heart in your chest.

2009 has given us solid records so far. The Marked Men’s (Ghosts) record is good ol fashioned punk the way you like it. Fast, snotty, loud! Obits’ (I Blame You) is new on SubPop and features music and artwork from Rick Froberg (Hot Snakes, Drive Like Jehu). Similar to Hot Snakes but..not. More grown-up maybe? Just check it out. And the new Kylesa (Static Tensions) is HEEEAAVVYY! Pummeling, aggressive, & brutal. Check ‘em out on the road too, opening for Mastodon.

And speaking of shows, I recently saw my friends The Alkaline Trio for a couple shows here in the Windy City. They did an amazing version of Nomeansno’ Two Lips, Two Lungs, and One Tongue. And this episode clocks in at an hour, so yer getting yer money’s worth here. I’ve been discovering loads of 60s garage and surf, and could easily do a whole show dedicated. Maybe sometime in the future an all raw, rawkin 60s set. But for now a few songs for ya mixed in with…The Fuzztones have been around forever, influencing everyone from The Cramps to Hoodoo Gurus to Mudhoney with their raunchy, overly distorted “psychedelic” guitar fuzz and fury. Their 2008 release shows they can still stick it to ya… New, surprisingly good record from Canada punksters Propagandhi, add a lil crossover metal to their sound. Better than their last effort I think… Good heavy stuff this week, a band called Ghaust who I recently discovered. Also newly discovered Swallow the Ocean, a Red Sparowes-ish recording which also came out last year. If These Trees Could Talk released a follow up to their ep from a few years back. They don’t seem to deviate too far from their formula, long songs, loud to quiet to loud, intricate. But they do it well… Rounding out the show, solo stuff from Ben Nichols of Lucero. This guy has one cool-ass voice. Makes me want to start smoking. And as always, lots of classic punk to fill the gaps. Enjoy friends.

So, I’m sure by now most have heard the sad news about the death of The Cramps lead singer, Lux Interior. The Cramps had a significant impact and influence on the garage and punk evolution; it only seems necessary to play something in their honor. Human Fly, a Cramps classic starts the show, and Bop Pills, a song that the Cramps covered and made their own is later in the set. R.I.P. Lux. Next up, big news…the new, highly anticipated Mastodon “Crack the Skye” record was leaked online, (minus the last song…grrr). The official release date isn’t until March 24th, (April 14th for you vinyl lovers) and after seeing the leaked record being pulled down everywhere, I was hesitant to play something from it. But good news, one song “Divinations” has officially been released, so that’s here for ya. Trust me, the whole record smokes! A new tribute to “the man” Johnny Cash is out and features loads of awesome artists doing their version of his songs. Chuck Ragan (Hot Water Music), Bouncing Souls, Gaslight Anthem, Ben Nichols (Lucero), Russ Rankin (Good Riddance), and Dresden Dolls to name a few. How can you go wrong? Oh, and proceeds go to the Syrentha Savio Endowment, a non-profit providing assistance to underprivileged breast-cancer patients. Check it out!! And finally, The D4 is not to be confused with Dillinger Four, while Rev Organdrum is to be with Rev Horton Heat. So much good music, so little time. I promise… the next show will not take a month. Dig it!

Staticfraction episode/radio show thing #03, highlights lots of favorites from 2008. New amazing, kickass, awesomeness from The Gaslight Anthem, Melvins, and The Bronx were penetrating ear canals in heavy rotation, as well as the crispy, SoCal, rocknroll sounds of The Night Marchers — new project from ex-Rocket from the Crypt/Hot Snakes/Drive Like Jehu/Sultans honcho, Speedo. 2008 also brought a solid new bomb-string, stoner pop, thunder rock, doom pop classic from Torche. But the music isn’t the only awesome thing here. The vinyl record and packaging (courtesy of Hydrahead Records and Robotic Empire) is one of the most original ideas I’ve seen in a long time! Makes you both grateful and excited that bands are still producing heavenly slabs of vinyl in this digital/ipod age, while also keeping ‘album art’ alive and kickin. It’s damn cool and has to be seen, held, and caressed to be fully appreciated. And lastly but certainly not least, 2008 brought a reunion show from catchy as hell, skate rock, pop-punksters, Big Drill Car, one of my favorite bands growing up. After almost 20 years or so, they reformed for a few scattered shows and sounded great. I don’t think they have plans to record anything new, but we can still dream and hope. I started the show off with an alt version of one of their classic songs… Until next time, cheers…

Big Drill Car – A Take Away (Alt. Vers) (The Big One compilation - 1990)

The Gaslight Anthem – The ’59 Sound (The ’59 Sound LP – 2008)

Melvins – Billy Fish (Nude with Boots LP – 2008)

Detonators – Johnny Law (Balls to You LP – 1988)

Russian Circles – Station (Station LP – 2008)

Marvelous Darlings – I Don’t Wanna Go to the Party (7” – 2008)

Drag The River – Get Drunk (Closed LP - 2002)

The Austerity Program – Song 12 (Black Madonna LP – 2007)

The Night Marchers – I Wanna Deadbeat You (See You in Magic LP – 2008)

Scared of Chaka – Garbage Can (Hutch Brown Sayngwich LP -1995)

The Bronx – Inveigh (Bronx III – 2008)

The Sword – The Black River (Gods of the Earth LP – 2008)

Verbal Abuse – Disintegration (Just an American Band LP – 1983)

Torche – Grenades (Meanderthal LP - 2008)

The Loved Ones – Lousiana (Build and Burn LP – 2008)

Dantes – Zebra Shoot (Strummin’ Mental Part One Raw Rare & Rockin Instrumentals 1958 – 1965)
