Ooo boy howdy. It’s that time again!!!!! Another thrilling, heart-pounding, show-stopping adventure through the depths of the Rock N Roll vaults! You know how it goes: punk, garage, surf, metal, and of course, rock n roll!!!

The Urges (Dublin, Ireland) put the laughter back in manslaughter. Psyched-out 60’s style garage punk. Best thing from Ireland since Jameson. On Wicked Cool records. Another freakin’ fabulous record from Vee Dee, bass-heavy, fist-pumping, punk with a twist of hard-edged garage psychedelia. Criminal IQ records.

Some classic punk from each coastlines for ya since summer is upon us and BBQs are-a-rollin’ out. From the east, Murphy’s Law (NY) and their ‘hit’ from their first self-titled record. Stuff your face and have your fill! And from the west, M.I.A. (not the electronic band) from Cali, and their quite nice, pop-punk cover of Califonia Dreamin’. This comes from the After the Fact record on Flipside records. For a history lesson kids, a few of these guys went on to form Big Drill Car.

Death (not the metal band) was around in Detroit, 1975. 3 brothers recorded this incredible, lost record, which has recently been re-issued on Drag City records. Death falls somewhere between 70’s hard rock, the Stooges and MC5, and Bad Brains. 7 songs and all amazing!

Millions is a Chicago based outfit, on the Seventh Rule label (Indian, Sweet Cobra, Akimbo). It’s math-metal, mid-90s noise, noisy hardcore, thrown into a blender with whiskey and southern-fried rock. Grrr.

A couple of Sabbath-esque songs. Serpent Throne (Germany) on Modus Operandi records, and Black Pyramid (Massachusetts) from their self titled release on MeteorCity records. This stuff is always a hit a BBQ’s too. Heavy!! Steak Number Eight (Belgium) takes a big nod to ISIS and Neurosis. Experimental/Post Metal. Self-released.

End (New York) sounds like a new hipster electronic band being mugged in a back alley by a surf rock band. Retro 60s vibe, sounding like Big Black trying to play the Batman Theme. Name drop time: Mike Patton (Faith No More, Mr. Bungle, Fantomas, Tomahawk, Dub Trio, etc. etc.). Nuff said.

And lastly, NOFX. Probably all I need to say, but I’ve been a fan for a long time and their latest Coaster (the CD) or Frisbee (the LP), is entertaining as usual. Nothing mind-blowing, just fun. No political stuff here either. On Fat Wreckchords. But you knew that already.

  1. Another fine selection of rock and or roll. Flaster did a good job on that Millions record.
